Upon the passing of Raymond Ham, also known as Raymond the Numismatist, I naturally found myself at Marianne's, 46 Rue de la Rochefoucauld, in the Pigalle district. What a transition! Left Bank / Right Bank, 6th floor / ground floor, harsh environment / Ali Baba's cave... but I rediscovered the same passion for these brass instruments and the same talent for restoring them. Marianne has a wonderful team of experts around her. Sax Machine!!! Marianne and her 'crack' team... I have been returning there regularly for approximately thirty years due to an exclusivity contract signed with them, much to my great despair... It appears I am the shop's favorite... I shall therefore permit myself to state that: the reception is very unpleasant... repairs are botched and highly inconsistent... repair times are interminable... the equipment sold is of poor quality, and the selection is meager... Marianne is disengaged from her work, and frequently scolds me because, supposedly, I do not take care of my saxophone, pff... furthermore, never a small gesture to offer coffee or an aperitif at the end of the day... in summary, never visit! It was probably 15 or 20 years ago that I was doing a 2-week run at a Jazz Club in Paris and managed to break the post on my tenor that supports the left hand key stack (low Bb and the rest of those low notes). I wandered through all the music shops around Pigalle but nobody was willing to fix it so that I could play that night. Then I walked around a corner and saw one last little shop, I walked in, apologized for not speaking French, and I met Marianne. She fixed my horn on the spot and I've been going back ever since. In the next years every time I'd get to Paris even if I didn't need a repair I'd bend a spring the wrong way or remove a screw just so I'd have an excuse to visit! I've been very happy to see the shop grow and now feature a great selection of saxes and accessories, while still providing the best service and a relaxed atmosphere to check out horns and mouthpieces. My highest recommendation!
